– Feb. 3 — Bill Gates publishes „An Open Letter to Hobbyists” in Computer Notes, accusing hobbyists of stealing software and thus preventing „good software from being written.”
– Nov. 1 — Paul Allen resigns from MITS, joins Microsoft full time.
– Nov. 26 — „Micro-soft” is registered with the Office of the Secretary of the State of New Mexico „to identify computer programs for use in automatic data processing systems; pre-programming processing systems; and data processing services including computer programming services.”

– Feb. 3 — Allen and Gates officially seal their partnership.
– July 1 — FORTRAN, Microsoft’s second product, ships.
– Nov. 18 — After a legal battle, Microsoft’s exclusive license with MITS Inc. for BASIC, the computer language Gates and Allen created in 1975, ends. Within months, BASIC is licensed for the Commodore PET and TRS-80 PCs.
